Drug addicts quickly lose their memory

Even if ecstasy is used in a short time, it does not save the brain from damage. A new study by scientists from Amsterdam showed that the use of ecstasy weakening function memorization. The study was conducted on animals and found that ecstasy permanently damage neurons involved in the development of serotonin, a chemical associated with mood, working memory and other brain activity.

Ecstasy also has a strong influence on the hippocampus - a brain area associated with the transition of short-term memory in the long term. Recently, a team of scientists led by Ben Shmandom of Amsterdam University attracted to the study of 188 volunteers who had previously never tried ecstasy, but were going to do it in the near future. Scientists have conducted psychological testing of volunteers, includes memory and attention.

A few months later the volunteers called for new tests and found that 58 of them at least once over time tried ecstasy. Despite the low dosage, the researchers diagnosed they have a small but statistically significant decrease of the ability to memorize. The test was to remember 15 words, and playing them in 20 minutes. Scientists report that the study confirms the neurotoxicity of the drug ecstasy, which, inter alia, leads to a lower level of serotonin in the brain.
